Frequently asked questions

There are two types of Olivita: natural and lemon-flavoured. Purified seal does not have much flavour, so the dominant taste in the natural version is olive oil. Many customers notice a pepper-like aftertaste when they take Olivita. This comes from the olive oil and is a sign that the olive oil is rich in antioxidants. The olive oil in Olivita has a high content of the antioxidant Oleocanthal. Oleo means ‘olive’, canth means ‘sting’ and ‘al’ means aldehyde.

The lemon-flavoured version contains natural lemon and has a fresh citrus taste.

We often receive feedback from customers that Olivita tastes surprisingly good.

No, if you take Olivita you will receive the recommended daily intake of omega-3 and Vitamin D.

We recommend taking Olivita with food.

The olive oil solidifies at low temperatures. It is completely harmless, but some people may perceive this as somewhat unpleasant. The original consistency will return after a short time at room temperature. Shake the bottle before use.

No, it’s not rancid. The slightly bitter aftertaste you experience in your throat may be attributed to oleocanthal (an antioxidant), which is in our cold-pressed olive oil. Olivita contains a carefully chosen Spanish olive oil, which is chosen because of its rich content of antioxidants. The antioxidants protect the refined omega-3 fatty acids in the seal oil from oxidising. The greater the burning sensation in your throat, the higher the content of oleocanthal and thus the healthier the oil is. Oleocanthal means ‘olive sting’.

You can store the products in a cupboard, refrigerator or on the kitchen bench. However, it is important that the products are not exposed to sunlight or high temperatures.

The recommended daily intake of omega-3 will vary from person to person depending on factors such as age, health condition, the number of fish meals per week, diet and lifestyle, etc.

The recommended daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids varies from country to country. Recommendations include:

Norway:

  • 300 – 450 g pure fish per week (Source: Norwegian Directorate of Health). The Norwegian health authorities do not operate with a specific recommendation of the daily intake of omega-3 fatty acids.

USA:

  • 500 mg marine omega-3 per day for adults (The American Heart Association).
  • 1 600 mg for men and 1 100 mg for women aged 14 + (National Academy for Medicine).

EU:

  • 250 mg marine omega-3 for healthy people to prevent cardiovascular diseases (EFSA).
  • 2000-4000 mg marine omega-3 for people in the risk group (EFSA).

The recommendations by EFSA will be met by eating one dinner of cod (150 g) and one dinner of salmon (150 g) per week. However, a higher intake of fatty fish (e.g. herring) is needed to meet the recommendations for Vitamin D.

The content varies between 12 and 14. The peroxide value (PV) is approx. 2.9 and the anisidine value (AV) is approx. 8. The Global Organisation of EPA og DHA Omega-3 (GOED) has set the limit values at 5 for PV and 20 for AV.

Olivita is first and foremost developed to prevent cardiovascular diseases1, which for instance is caused by calcification of the arteries. As calcification or clogging of the arteries is a slow process, we recommend taking Olivita regularly. Feedback from customers over many years is that they experience a sense of improved wellbeing after taking Olivita for approx. 8 weeks. The feedback often mentions softer joints, which must be attributed to the DPA fatty acid in seal oil. Many also claim they have not had a cold or the flue since they started taking Olivita.

1 EPA and DHA contribute to normal function of the heart. The beneficial effects are obtained with a daily intake of 250 mg DHA and EPA.

No, the seal oil undergoes thorough purification before being approved for human consumption. The seal oil is refined at Fortuna Oils in Kristiansund. Read more about the refining process of seal oil.

Each batch of oil is analyzed and the oil can be traced from the capsule to the processing plant. Every link in the supply chain is certified.  The food grade refining plant at Fortuna Oils is ISO 9001:2008 certified.

No, fish lacks the important omega-3 fatty acid DPA found in sea oil. The effect achieved by using Olivita only occurs through the correct balance of the marine component and the olive oil. Furthermore, there are many different types of olive oil (extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil and olive oil). Olivita contains a cold-pressed (extra virgin) olive oil which contains very potent healthy antioxidants.

The essential factor is that the omega-3 fatty acids are protected by the antioxidants when they enter the body, providing the person does not have a surplus of antioxidants in their body through their diet.

Even though, Olivita should never replace a balanced diet.

Seals are generally hunted now using rifles and all the sealing vessels has a veterinary are onboard to monitor the catch.

Norwegian sealing is strictly regulated by “Forskrift om utøvelse av selfangst i Vesterisen og Østisen” (Regulations for the hunting of seals in the West Arctic Sea and the East Arctic Sea)

The seal oil comes from a sustainable population of harp seals on the West Ice, located north of Iceland between Greenland and Jan Mayen island. Since 2016, the seal oil used by Olivita AS has been supplied by the sealing vessel MS Havsel. The sealing season is from 20 March to 5 May.

The extra virgin olive oil is from Spain and is carefully selected to meet specified requirements and quality parameters.

Olivita is the only omega-3 dietary supplement on the market consisting of refined seal oil and cold-pressed olive oil.

Seal oil contains larger amounts of the omega-3 fatty acid DPA than omega-3 from fish or krill. DPA originates from another fatty acid EPA. However, although fish oil contains only small amounts of DPA, seal oil contains relatively plentiful amounts. The oil from the harp seal contains 4-6%. It has been claimed that around one-third of the health benefits of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids circulating in the human body may be attributed to the effects of the DPA fatty acid.

The olive oil is rich in potent antioxidants which have proven to be very healthy, especially the anti-inflammatory effect.

Nine clinical studies on more than 1,200 people in the period from 1986-2010 have demonstrated that the synergy between these two health-promoting oils has a fantastic effect in protecting against the development of cardiovascular diseases1.

1 EPA and DHA contribute to maintaining the heart functioning normally.

Always consult a doctor if you are using or have recently used medicines while taking Olivita. This also applies to the use of non-prescription medicines.

If you are using an anticoagulant (blood thinner), we recommend consulting a doctor before using Olivita because, generally speaking, omega-3 are anticoagulants.

If you are going to undergo surgery, please inform your doctor and/or the hospital that you are using an omega-3 dietary supplement.
